Win money for classroom Art Supplies! K Space Contemporary will host the 7th Annual Extravagancia de Piñatas exhibition and competition for youth in conjunction with our annual Dia de los Muertos Festival. Local K-12 teachers are invited to create piñatas with their youth groups, classes, and/or after-school clubs.

The first 15 teachers to turn in entry forms receive a supply allowance of $30 to use towards making their piñata. Cash awards are given for piñatas receiving the highest number of votes in the following categories: Elementary (K-5), Middle School (6-8) and High School (9-12). Awards must be used for classroom supplies.

This year’s theme is Lucha Libre.

Eligibility: Open to K-12 school groups (classes/clubs) in Corpus Christi and cities within a 50-mile radius. Each group/club may enter one hand-constructed Piñata, as we expect them to be group projects. Piñatas must be delivered to K Space Contemporary by Oct.21. To register to participate, complete the attached form and fax to 361-882-8665 or email to info@kspacecontemporary.org. (Info also available at www.diadelosmuertoscc.com/pinata-contest/.)

AWARDS: $200 Purchase Award (becomes property of K Space Contemporary) for First Place, and $100 for Second Place in each category – Elementary (K-5), Middle School (6-8), High School (9-12). Checks presented to the winning groups’ leader are to be used for classroom art supplies. Voting is by public ballot October 25-November 4. First Place Purchase Award winners will be displayed for decoration at future Dia de los Muertos Festivals.

2016 Theme: Piñatas de Calaveras Gigantes! Calavera is the Spanish term most often applied to decorative or edible skulls used in the Mexican celebration of the Day of the Dead. Think sugar skull, think big, think colorful and beautiful. You have creative license – Go big, Go bright, Go loco!

Size: Piñatas must must fit through a 30” x 78″ doorway and weigh 10 pounds or less.

Hanger: must be ready-to-hang with a built-in secure, sturdy hanger. K Space is not responsible for broken piñatas that have fallen because of faulty construction or faulty suspension method.

Label: Attach a label to the hanger that includes: School/Group, Teacher/Leader’s name, Leader’s email address & phone number, title, and price. Label form is provided at the bottom of the entry form.

Sales: Piñatas can be priced for sale. 100% of the proceeds from sales are paid to the participating group’s leader by check. Enter “NFS“(not for sale: “NFS” – not eligible to place 1st Purchase Award) as “retail price” if you do not want to sell your piñata.
